This is a 1 3/4" diameter brass Challenge coin for the 501st Military Intellegence Bn in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The coin has an old brass finish, and is painted as appropriate. The front of the coin show a map of Iraq, US and Iraqi flags and the patch of the 1st Armored Division surrounded by "Operation Iraqi Freedom, Coin of Excellence". The Iraqi flag is that used from 1963 to 1991. The back of the coin depicts a military crest above a quotation. "501st Military Intelligence Battalion, Outfront" is in the surround.

This is a 2" diameter brass Challenge coin for the McDonald Army Health Center, at Fort Eustis, VA. The coin is painted as appropriate and coated with resin. The front of the coin features the DI of the Army Medical Department with a smaller DI for the US Army Medical Dept Activity, Ft. Eustis in front of it, both surrounded by "McDonald Army Health Center, Fort Eustis, Virginia". The metal is punched out between the DI's and the surrounding verbiage. The back of the coin shows a medic treating a wounded soldier, a colonel's eagle and a staff sgt. major's stripes with "Fort Eustis, Fort Monroe, Fort Story, In Recognition of Excellence" in the surround.

The Faithful Service Medals were instituted to recognize long service to one employer. There were 3 grades: silver for 25 years, gold for 40 years and a special grade in gold and silver for 50 years. The design was that of a cross with an oakleaf wreath behind it and a black enamel swastika in a box at the center of the cross. The special grade was in silver with a gilt wreath. The 50 year also had the number "50" in gold on the upper arm of the cross. There is a box in the center of the reverse side of all 3 grades. It states "Fur Treue Dienst" (for loyal service) on the silver and gold grades and "Fur Treue Arbeit" (for loyal work) on the special grade. All 3 grades were suspended from identical cornflower blue ribbons.

The Ground Combat Badge of the Luftwaffe was instituted in 1942 to recognize the efforts of the Luftwaffe ground combat units. Like the equivalent army badges, the recipient had to take part in 3 separate actions on 3 separate days to qualify. The design of the badge is a vertical oakleaf wreath tied at the bottom with a Luftwaffe eagle in flight at the top. Behind the eagle is a cloud that has a lightning bolt extending from it to the ground. The eagle and wreath were in matte silver (silvered pot metal). The cloud and lightning bolt were darkened silver. On some higher quality badges, the eagle consisted of a separate stamped silver piece riveted over the eagle on the badge. The cloud and lightning bolt were frequently just painted dark gray. Most badges were unmarked.

The Infantry Assault in silver was instituted late in 1939. It was awarded for 3 separate infantry actions on 3 separate days. In 1940 a bronze grade was added basically for motorized infantry units. In addition to Army units, it was also awarded to Waffen - SS units. The badge consisted of a vertical oakleaf wreath tied at the bottom, with a drop wing army eagle at the top. A rifle with a fixed bayonet and sling ran from about 4 o'clock to 11 o'clock. A vertical pin secured the badge to the wearer's tunic. There is a wide array of makers and construction details for this badge. They may be thin stamped pieces, die cast, die struck, flat back or scooped out. Early badges may be brass, painted or plated. Later examples are normally zinc with a bronze or silver wash. Badges may be maker marked or unmarked.

During WWI, the Iron Cross could be awarded for non combat purposes. These awards had the ribbon colors reversed. When the Iron Cross was re-instituted in 1939, this provision was eliminated. In its place, the War Merit Cross was instituted. Originally it was available in 2 classes each with and without swords. The War Merit Cross 2nd class without swords was a bronze Maltese cross about 1 7/8" square. The front of the cross had a swastika standing on a point within a wreath at its center. The reverse had "1939" also in an oakleaf wreath in the center. The cross was suspended from a ribbon with a black center stripe flanked by white stripes. Outside of the white stripes were red edge stripes. Most War Merit Crosses were maker marked on the jump ring. The War Merit Cross 2nd Class with swords was identical to the War Merit Cross 2nd Class without swords, except that a pair of crossed swords went from 10:30 to 4:30 and from 7:30 to 1:30. The earlier medals were made of tombac. Later examples were zinc with a bronze wash. Most of these have faded to gray. The first class medals were silvered pinback medals of the same size as the second class. These were usually marked on the back side or on the pin. The earlier medals were either made of tombac or other metals and plated with a silver metal. Later examples were zinc with a silver wash.

In 1939, Adolf Hitler instituted the 1939 wound badge series. The original series awarded to condor legion veterans was made of stamped steel with a high, sharp edged swastika having the material between the arms flush with the surface of the helmet. Later, WWI wound badges were reused with a swastika added until the WWII pattern was available. These swastikas were lower with more rounded edges and slightly elevated material between the arms. This badge is a 1939 first pattern wound badge, but not a true (exceptionally rare) condor legion wound badge. It is made from a WWI black wound badge of stamped bronze with a swastika added. The helmet is a type III (or possibly type II).

A series of four military long service medals was instituted by Hitler in 1936 for 4, 12, 18 and 25 years of service. The 4 and 12 year were round, silver and gold respectively. The 18 and 25 year were Maltese crosses in silver and gold respectively. All were suspended from cornflower blue ribbons with a spread wing eagle of the same color as the medal. In 1939 a gold wreath device was added. This took the form of a half wreath to be added to the 25 year ribbon.

Below the crown is the initials "FW" for Freidrick Wilhelm. The jump ring is either unmarked or it may have a maker mark on it. Occasionally, there may be a silver mark on the cross. These marks may be difficult to read. The basic cross is made of an iron or brass core painted black within a two piece frame of silvered metal, usually brass. Both the front and back halves of the frame are cut out to show the iron core. It measures about 1 3/4” square. The ribbon has black outer stripes followed by white stripes. The center is a wide black stripe.

There is very little hard information available for this badge. It is for women drivers during the war. I suspect women were given temporary driving duties within the NSKK to release NSKK men for duty in units supporting front line troops. These pinback badges are about 1" in diameter and feature a flat black painted steering wheel with a swastika in the center. "N.S.K.K" appears in the upper part of the badge and "Kriegskraftfahrerin" on a banner in the lower section. The pebbled background is either green or red. We do not know what the color difference means. These badges are widely faked. These badges are widely faked. Originals are painted with red or green satin finish paint, not enameled. They are not plated. Originals are RZM marked.

The black wound badge was awarded for one or two qualifying wounds, regardless of branch of service. Frostbite counted as a wound. The design of all three grades of wound badge is the same: a WWII German helmet in profile with a swastika on the side in front of crossed swords all inside of a laurel leaf wreath, tied at the bottom with a bow. The badges have a pebbled background. These were stamped out of brass, zinc (or pot metal) or steel. A vertical pin with a catch at the bottom of the badge secured it to the uniform. All were hollow back. Most badges were maker marked, but a few were not. Construction details in the area of the pin, hinge and catch varied from manufacturer to manufacturer.

This medal was awarded to all troops that survived the first terrible winter in Russia, regardless of branch of service. The design of this medal is quite attractive. It is basically a 1 3/8” diameter disc with a profile of the distinctive German coal scuttle helmet resting on a potato masher grenade. The main design in the center of the disc is a German drop wing eagle perched on a swastika in the static position (a flat side down). Behind the swastika is a sprig of laurel leaves. The reverse has the wording “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941 / 42” above a crossed sword and laurel sprig. The planchet is flat gray with a silver wash on the rim, helmet and grenade, which has normally faded to gray with age. The medal is usually unmarked, but may have a maker mark on the jump ring. The ribbon is red with a thin black center stripe flanked by thin white stripes.

During WWII many non-Germans fought in the German armed forces, including Russians who felt it would be better to live under the nazis than the communists. It was not unusual for Russian troops to surrender to the Germans and volunteer to work for or to fight for the Germans. These foreign nationals were supposed to wear an insignia on the upper arm to indicate their nationality. These were normally shield shaped and were produced in many different ways. Many varied and convoluted organizations were developed to utilize this manpower pool. One of these was the Russian Army of Liberation. This group wore a sleeve shield having a blue cross of St. Andrew on a white shield with a red border. The letters "POA" (ROA in Cyrillic) appeared above the shield.

It is machine woven and consists of a dark gray vertical oval with the first pattern Red Cross eagle which has the red cross below the black eagle. The familiar silver gray on black second pattern Waffen-SS machine embroidered sleeve eagle was introduced in 1938. There were numerous minor variations of this sleeve eagle, but all had a common feature, except the final pattern. The top row of stitching forming the eagle's wings was slanted in the opposite direction from the lower 4 rows. Only on the final pattern did all rows slant in the same direction.

This insignia was produced from about 1944 on for the Waffen-SS black M-43 used by armored troops. The one piece design was an economy measure. Some were produced with one row of teeth while others were produced with one row of teeth. They were folded into a trapezoidal shape when sewn to the M-43. Identical insignia were produced for the field gray M-43's used by non-armored troops.

If this one could talk, it might have some very interesting stories to tell. It is the real deal, a true U.S. Army Air Force officer's crush cap, as worn principally by pilots during WWII. This example has the jaunty look of a cap worn by one of the guys who flew the Hump over the Himalayas between India and China. The name comes from the fact that it is manufactured with a flexible visor and frame so it can be be worn with head phones in place or rolled up and put in a back pocket while a flight helmet is worn.
