M08259X3 Unknown Shoulder Boards

I’m not sure what we have here, but someone out there does.

I suspect they are WWI, but not German.

This is a matched pair of shoulder boards constructed of a single thickness of heavy yellow wool felt with the number "142'" chain stitched in red on each one. They have been sewn into the shoulder seam of a tunic and exhibit soiling under the button and on the part of the board that was in the seam.

There is no reinforcing to the buttonholes, but there are traces of paper within the chain stitching from the reinforcing used during application of the numbers.

They are about 5" long and about 2 3/8" wide.
