U7093-8 - U. S. Navy Cold Weather Face Mask

U7093-8 - U. S. Navy Cold Weather Face Mask

WWII era navy blue felt face mask for extreme cold weather.

This is an all felt face mask for extreme cold weather. The actual face mask portion is constructed of a double thickness of felt, navy blue on the outside and white on the inside. It has openings for the eyes, nose and mouth. The mouth opening has a perforated flap with a snap closure. The black head straps retain fair elasticity. There is a skirt at the bottom of the mask that goes inside of the wearer's coat and protects the neck and throat regions. The shirt is a single thickness of felt and closes at the back with 2 snaps.

I'm not certain of the exact age of this item. Modern varieties have an outer vinyl plastic layer. The only mark is "17" in white inside the skirt. It looks to be a stencil, about 1" high.

The mask is in overall good condition with a few moth nips mostly to the inner white felt, slight surface corrosion to the blackened brass snaps (will easily clean up) and a few small tears that can be fixed easily with a few stitches or glue.
