MFRG92 French Commemorative Medal of the Great War (to US Soldier?)

MFRG92 French Commemorative Medal of the Great War (to US Soldier?)

This medal was awarded to all French military personnel and some civilian auxiliaries who served in WWI. It was authorized in 1920. However, the typical French pin has been removed and replaced with an American style pin. The pin replacement looks professionally done. For this reason, I believe the medal was probably awarded to an American who fought under French command, such as the members of the all black 92nd and 93rd infantry divisions.

The front depicts the profile of Marianne (the French equivalent of Lady Liberty or possibly Uncle Sam) in a WWI Adrian helmet with a sword. The reverse has the inscription “REPVBLIQUE FRANCAISE GRANDE GUERRE 1914 – 1918”.
The medal is struck in bronze and is about 1 ¼” diameter. It is suspended from a 1 3/8” wide white ribbon with 5 somewhat faded red stripes. The detail on this strike is excellent. The typical French pin has been removed and replaced with an American style pin.
